A Day Hike, Up Fish Hill

God's creation is always a great place to go when you have the opportunity, and today we had a couple of extra hours to spare and we decided to go on a hike with our kids. The location of the hike is called, "Fish Hill" just on Northwest side of the city. They call it fish hill because of the white, "Christian" style fish that is on the side of the hill. Unfortunately we didn't get a picture of that, but all the pictures below are from our hike. Enjoy!!!

A very important aspect of living in Mexico and learning the language is doing things called, "Culture Events". Basically what that means is that we go out into the community and do different, culture related things. While doing them we can observe and take notes on how Mexican people interact with one another.

Today we went to a Dulceria, which is basically just a big candy shop, but also a place where you can get most of the things that you would need to have an awesome party...for kids!!!

La Sierra

Yesterday we got to enjoy a wonderful day away from the city. We love the wilderness and being able to get out into God's creation. Majalca state park, was the site of these pictures and because of all the rain it was beautiful up there. Trees, flowers, grass, and wildlife were just a few of the things that we got to experience.

Our good friends, and future partners, the Eversons also joined us. They love the outdoors as well, and really enjoyed this trip. Countless times during our time in Majalca comments were made about needing to get back out there to camp. Needless to say, we are planning a trip for the near future!!!

Getting to where we parked, and then explored, requires driving through a river bottom, and part of our adventure out at Majalca was helping two trucks get unstuck!!!

Enjoying life in Chihuahua - Outing to the Deportiva

One of the things we have loved doing, is going down to the main park in town called the "Deportiva". There are trees, grass, people, aniamls, food, fun, and trees...oh yea and grass!!! On this particular day we rode the bus, from our house down to the park and back and in the midst of our adventure we got poured on!!! Here are some pics from our outing.

Prior to getting poured on, we did get to experience a beautiful day of sunshine at the Deportiva. Here the kids are playing on what Mexicans call, "Brinka Brinka". They had a lot of fun trying to reach the top and then come down.

Exploring Mexico with Sergio!!!

This past weekend (May 2-5) we had the opportunity to not only see more of Mexico, but also to experience the area where our good friend Sergio lived and worked prior to coming to Chihuahua to go to Bible School.

It was a bitter, sweet time for Sergio as he had the opportunity to see, maybe for the last time, friends that he had worked with for 5 years. His friends, Tim and Cathey, had pretty much adopted Sergio as a son during the time he worked with them, and he considered them his parents as well.

A little over a year ago, Sergio was in a life threatening accident that almost took his life. A friend and him were riding a 4 wheeler (to the left), at night, and missed a turn on a narrow mountain road. The driver, after realizing what had happened, and that he had lost control jumped off, leaving Sergio on the back wondering what was going on. Sergio, and the 4 wheeler, both headed down the steep side of the mountain finally coming to a rest 3/4 of the way down. Truly it is by the grace of God that Sergio is alive, and we are thankful to know him.

Everybody enjoyed our trip, and the many different things that we were able to do. Through pictures we will try to give you a little taste of what went on during our time in Sergio's old stomping grounds.

"Los Arcos" is a famous Mennonite Pizza place in one of the towns that we passed through on our journey.

Here I am, just enjoying some "Los Arcos" pizza...it was really tasty.

Once we left the main "Pueblo" that is near the ranch, we had 20 miles of dirt road, mostly on high, narrow, mountain roads. Here Sergio is opening one of the 8 gates that we had to pass through.

Caleb is going on hike with Sergio, Sissy, and me (daddy). In the background is the house we stayed in the first night we were there.

We are thankful to God for the wonderful, safe trip that we had and for the opportunity to learn more about our friend Serigo and where he comes from. The more time that we spend in Mexico, the more we appreciate and love the Mexican people, language and culture. We are thankful to God for the opportunity to be vessels of mercy to these marvelous people.

The Life of MK's!

Life in a new culture and city can sometimes be hard, and overwhelming (especially for MK's - Missionary Kids) but at the same time there are many things that are new and exciting, such as;

NEW HAIRSTYLES,

NEW FRIENDS,

NEW FOOD....JUST JOKING, WE DIDN'T EAT THIS, AND WE DIDN'T MAKE OUR KIDS EITHER,

NEW, OLD, BUILDINGS,

NEW WAYS TO SHOP,

AND NEW EXPERIENCES, WITH OLD FRIENDS!

The life of an MK is one that is unique and challenging. Sometimes Lisa and I wonder, "what have we gotten our kids into?" But as we reflect on the many MK's we have met over the course of the last 5 years, and the truth that God has called our whole family to Mexico, we realize that Eliana and Caleb will have the opportunity to experience things that most people only dream about. Learning new languages, meeting new people, seeing different landscapes, and most importantly seeing God move in a different culture. We feel priviledged, not only to be able to take God's Word to people that have never heard, but also to be able to raise our kids in this kind of enviroment.

Fun at the park!

Whenever we can break away from our daily grind, we try to get to the local parks to experience some good Mexican culture, as well as seeing some of that green stuff. Living in the high desert you kind of forget about the diversity of colors that you experience through the 4 seasons, but then you come across a park that has some brilliant green grass and you are transported back to the bounty of colors that is God's creation.

On this particular trip to the park, we were just enjoying the beautiful day, meeting some friends, and playing with some of the toys that Caleb got for his birthday. Unfortunantly there weren't many Mexican children but we enjoyed the time as a family.

When you have kids, it is interesting to note the different and unique ways in which they were made and personalities formed. I don't understand how it all works, but am confident that God knows and is in control. I also think that God gives us the kids that we have to both mature and make our lives interesting and fun. This video is of Caleb at the dinner table, tring to perfect his speech! This was one of those moments that we just had to laugh! Enjoy!

Gimnasio

Yesterday we had the opportunity to spend some extra time with our new brothers and sisters in Christ. The church we attend here in Chihuahua, Rei de Gloria (King of Glory), invited us to a gymnasium to enjoy some volleyball and basketball with other local churches. It was so much fun. We really enjoy the time we get to spend with these new friends, even when our brain does tire from so much Spanish. =-) And the children love to be out and about taking in their new surroundings. Little by little, we are all picking up more Spanish. More importantly, we are building relationships with the people God has placed in our lives.

Caleb's Third Birthday

Wednesday was Caleb's birthday. We don't know who was more excited, him or Eliana. It was a great day as a family and because our babysitter was sick, I stayed home from classes and put the finishing touches on Caleb's "fiesta". He really only had a few requests; chocolate frosting on his cake, homemade cheese pizza, and a hula-hoop as his present. That's right, a hula-hoop. Well, Caleb got his three requests and was delighted with trying to manuever the hula-hoop around his waist. We all got a chuckle at seeing his little hips move. He really brings a lot of joy and smiles to our family. Thank you Lord for the sweet spirited boy you have given us.
